The Mission featuring BCFHOF Member Greg Coleman
In celebration of Black History Month, “The Mission” podcast will bring exclusive content throughout February that features amazing stories from African American Legends and Pioneers of the Game.
Newly elected Black College Football Hall of Famer Greg Coleman sat with “The Mission” to discuss the life and legacy of being the first Black punter in the National Football League.
Coleman’s football journey began at Florida A&M University, where he was a standout on the football team. He served as the team’s kicker, punter and to this day is recognized as one of the best kickers in FAMU history.
He is a member of both the Florida A&M Football Hall of Fame and the State of Florida Track and Field Hall of Fame.
The Cincinnati Bengals drafted him in 1976, however, Coleman never played a game with them. He started his career with the Cleveland Browns in 1977.
At the age of 23, Coleman made his NFL debut with the Browns. He only spent one season in Cleveland, joining the Minnesota Vikings in 1978. Coleman spent the majority of his career with the Vikings. After 10 seasons in Minnesota, he concluded his NFL career with one final season in Washington.
