USFL Playoff Preview: Three Things To Know About The New Orleans Breakers

The New Orleans Breakers finished second in the South Division with record of 6-4, which earned them a trip to Canton’s Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium for a tilt with the top-seeded Birmingham Stallions in the USFL Playoffs on Saturday night.  is enough to land them a spot in the USFL’s inaugural playoff game Saturday night at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium.

Led by head coach Larry Fedora, they face off against the top seeded Birmingham Stallions.

Here are three things to know about the Breakers heading into this historical USFL playoff game. 

Run Ellis run

The Breakers have no trouble “breaking” through opponents’ front seven with star running back Jordan Ellis. Ellis leads the league in rushing yards with 596. 

 

 

Ellis averaged four yards per rushing attempt this season.

Close, but maybe a cigar?

While the Breakers lost both of their head-to-head meetings with the Stallions this season, it was only by a combined 10 points.

New Orleans also had the league’s best defense during the regular season, averaging only 16.4 points-against per game.

So while the Stallions are the clear favorites by virtue of their 9-1 record, the Breakers have the personnel to keep the game close and potentially spring an upset.

When New Orleans selected the nickname “Breakers,” there were some who questioned what exactly a “Breaker” was.
 



According to team officials, a breaker is heavy sea wave that breaks into white foam on the shore, which is prevalent off the coast of Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico.
