Buccaneers bring back 'Bucco Bruce,' 'creamsicle' uniforms
Throughout the franchise's 47-year history, numerous Pro Football Hall of Famers have worn the Buccaneers' colors, both new and old.
After Tampa Bay was awarded the National Football League's 27th franchise on April 24, 1974, they began play as an AFC team in the 1976 season. With the first overall pick of the '76 NFL Draft, the Buccaneers selected defensive lineman LEE ROY SELMON, hoping the college standout would bring great fortunes to the expansion team.
While Selmon’s success came right away, Tampa Bay's did not.
A historic streak of 26 consecutive losses during the franchise's first 15 months did not set expectations high. Two years later, however, under the foundation of former General Manager RON WOLF, the Bucs shocked the NFL and made a playoff run, reaching the 1979 NFC Championship Game.
Selmon set the precedent for the Buccaneers' defense over the course of his nine-year career, as Tampa Bay showed they had an eye for talent. In the first round of the 1984 Draft, they chose a left-handed quarterback out of Brigham Young, STEVE YOUNG. His tenure in Tampa Bay lasted only two seasons, as he was traded to the San Francisco 49ers.
Continuing the trend in 1995, the Bucs selected two defensive stars in the first round: WARREN SAPP with the 12th pick and DERRICK BROOKS with the 28th pick. The franchise didn't have to search too far for the talented players, as both played their collegiate ball in Florida — Sapp at Miami and Brooks at Florida State. They formed one of the NFL's most vaunted defenses, alongside safety JOHN LYNCH and defensive back RONDÉ BARBER. The Bucs selected both Lynch and Barber in the third-round of their respective drafts, Lynch in 1993 and Barber in 1997.
In 2000, the team signed offensive lineman RANDALL McDANIEL, who joined the team after 12 seasons in Minnesota. Under newly hired head coach TONY DUNGY, the team won 54 games over a six-year period. Dungy steered the Buccaneers' ship from 1996 until 2001.
In 2002, the Buccaneers reached new heights, winning the most games in franchise history (12) and claiming their first Super Bowl appearance. The team's defense ranked first in points and yards allowed and had the best ratio of takeaways to giveaways. Tampa Bay defeated the Oakland Raiders 48-21 in Super Bowl XXXVII, the first title in franchise history.
Two years later, legendary wide receiver TIM BROWN came to Tampa Bay for his final season. Brown had played 16 seasons before joining the Bucs, all with the Los Angeles/Oakland Raiders.
In 2013, cornerback DARRELLE REVIS signed with the Buccaneers after six years with the New York Jets.
Both Barber and Revis will be enshrined into the Hall of Fame's Class of 2023 in August.
The anticipation for the throwback uniforms comes after the initial launch was pushed back last season, leaving many fans excited when the team announced they would officially return this season.
