Entering the Minnesota Vikings’ matchup with the Detroit Lions on Christmas Eve, wide receiver Justin Jefferson needed six receiving yards to surpass Michael Thomas (5,512) for most by a player in his first four NFL seasons.
On the Vikings’ first possession, and third play of the game, Jefferson caught an 8-yard pass on his first target to break the record. The drive resulted in a touchdown that tied the game 7-7.
Finishing the contest with six catches for 141 yards and a touchdown, Jefferson’s career totals showed 5,648 receiving yards.
Jefferson also recorded his 28th career game with at least 100 receiving yards, tying Julio Jones for the second most such games by a player in his first five career NFL seasons. Only Pro Football Hall of Famer RANDY MOSS (30 games) has more.
Now on display in the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s “Pro Football Today Gallery” is the ball Jefferson caught to set the record.
