Pro Football Hall of Fame

On July 29, 1995, a visionary executive, two game-disrupting defensive tackles, a savvy route runner and a pertinacious pass-catcher were inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame

Executive JIM FINKS, defensive tackle HENRY JORDAN, wide receiver STEVE LARGENT, defensive tackle LEE ROY SELMON and tight end KELLEN WINSLOW are celebrating the 30-year anniversary of their enshrinement in the Hall.

Jim Finks is credited with revitalizing the Minnesota Vikings, Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints as a team executive. For Chicago, Finks drafted 19 of the Bears’ 22 starters on their Super Bowl-winning 1985 roster. During Finks tenure in Minnesota, the Vikings won five divisional titles and earned trips to two Super Bowls. Finks stamped his mark in New Orleans in 1991 when he led the 19-year-old franchise to its first division crown. A longtime member of the NFL’s competition committee, Finks also played quarterback and defensive back for the Pittsburgh Steelers for six seasons.

Henry Jordan bolstered a Cleveland Browns defensive line that led the franchise to a 1957 NFL Eastern Division title and tied for the division crown a year later. He was then traded to Vince Lombardi’s Green Bay Packers, where he anchored an outstanding defense that led the franchise to six divisional titles, five NFL championships and victories in the first two Super Bowls. Jordan was the fifth player to be elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame from the Green Bay defensive unit that helped to make the Packers the scourge of the National Football League during the 1960s. He won All-NFL acclaim five times (1960-64) and was selected to four Pro Bowls. He was named the Outstanding Lineman in the 1962 Pro Bowl classic.

At the time of Steve Largent’s retirement, he held six major career NFL pass receiving records — most receptions (819), most consecutive games with a reception (177), most yards on receptions (13,089), most touchdowns on receptions (100), most seasons with 50 or more receptions (10) and most seasons with 1,000 yards or more on receptions (8). He led the AFC with 71 receptions in 1978, and he had five other seasons with 70 or more receptions. The sure-handed receiver also led the NFL in pass-receiving yardage in 1979 and 1985. An All-Pro choice in 1983, 1985 and 1987, he was named All-AFC three times and selected for seven Pro Bowls.

Lee Roy Selmon was the tenacious leader of a Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive unit that produced two NFC Central Division championships in the team’s first six seasons. After winning both the Lombardi and Outland trophies for outstanding collegiate offensive linemen at the University of Oklahoma, Selmon was the first draft pick by the Buccaneers franchise in 1976. As a pro, Selmon was named the NFC Defensive Lineman of the Year four times by the NFL Players Association and he was a unanimous choice as NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1979. The five-time All-Pro selection was also selected to six consecutive Pro Bowls. Selmon holds the Bucs’ franchise records for most sacks in a game (3), most sacks in a season (13), most sacks in a career (78.5), most quarterback pressures in a season (72) and most forced fumbles in a career (27.5).

Despite being plagued by knee injuries, Kellen Winslow still amassed 541 receptions for 6,741 yards and 45 touchdowns in just nine NFL seasons. Winslow is the Chargers franchise record holder for most points in a game (30), most touchdowns in a game (5), most receptions in a game (15) and most receptions in a season (89). At the time of his retirement, Winslow’s 541 career receptions ranked fifth among active receivers and 14th among all NFL pass-catchers. A consensus All-Pro in 1980, 1981 and 1982, Winslow's most memorable performance occurred in 1981 in the Chargers 41-38 overtime playoff victory over Miami. He caught 13 passes for 166 yards and blocked a field goal with four seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime. Winslow won the NFL reception title in 1980 and 1981 and was selected to the NFL’s 75th Anniversary All-Time Team.
