Wehrli was named to the NFL's All-Decade team of the 1970s. He also earned first-team All-Pro recognition five times (1970, 1974, 1975, 1976, and 1977) and was named All-NFC five times.

Aside from his ability to cover receivers, Wehrli had a keen eye for finding the ball. His franchise record of 19 fumble recoveries still stands today.
