Parcells, Vermeil, Johnson head list of nominees for induction into Pro Football Hall of Fame

Canton, Ohio (AP) – Super Bowl winning coaches Jimmy Johnson, Bill Parcells and Dick Vermeil were among 78 former NFL players, coaches and contributors nominated Monday for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Johnson had a 89-68 record with the Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins, including Super Bowl victories with Dallas in 1993 and 1994.

Parcells had a record of 149-106-1 with the New York Giants, New England Patriots and the New York Jets, including Super Bowl victories with the Giants in 1987 and 1991. He also coached New England to the Super Bowl in 1997.

Vermeil had an 82-77 record with the Philadelphia Eagles and St. Louis Rams and won the Super Bowl with the Rams last season. He coached Philadelphia to the 1980 Super Bowl.

Others nominated for the first time were wide receivers Gary Clark and Art Monk, offensive lineman Chris Hinton, Bart Oates and Jackie Slater and linebackers Carl Banks and Wilber Marshall.

A list of 15 finalists will be announced in mid-January, with the 2000 inductees announced on Jan. 27, the day before the Super Bowl.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame's board of selectors vote for 12 modern-era finalists. Defensive end Jack Youngblood and wide receiver Lynn Swann will be added to the list because they finished in the top six in last year's voting for induction.

The 15th finalist is former Boston Patriots and Miami Dolphins linebacker Nick Buoniconti, the recommended candidate of a seniors committee.
