Clark in good company

History Published on : 9/22/2009

{GALLERY}Indianapolis Colts tight end Dallas Clark had a career game in his team’s win over the Miami Dolphins on Monday Night Football (NFL GameCenter: Colts 27, Dolphins 23). His 183 yards receiving were not only a career-high but also the fourth highest yardage total by a tight end since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970.

Clark’s output on Monday ranks behind only Shannon Sharpe, Rich Caster, and Hall of Famer Ozzie Newsome since 1970. Sharpe of the Denver Broncos had 214 yards in a game in 2002. The New York Jets’ Caster recorded 204 yards on Sept. 24, 1972; and Ozzie Newsome had 191 yards for the Cleveland Browns on October 14, 1984.

Newsome, Jackie Smith and Mike Ditka are the only Hall of Fame tight ends who had more yards in a game than Clark. Here’s the rundown of the best games recorded by the seven tight ends enshrined in Canton.

Jackie Smith, Cardinals 212 Oct. 13, 1963
Ozzie Newsome, Browns 191 Oct. 14, 1984
Mike Ditka, Bears 190 Nov. 12, 1961
Kellen Winslow, Chargers 171 Dec. 22, 1980
Dave Casper, Oilers 150 Nov. 30, 1980
Charlie Sanders, Lions 146 Oct. 27, 1974
John Mackey, Colts  144 Dec. 8, 1963
