{GALLERY}Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis is without a doubt one of the most decorated defenders in the history of the National Football League. The NFL’s Record and Fact Book is filled with Lewis’ name. His many achievements during his 17-year career (1996-2012) are noted. Of note, he is the only player in NFL history with at least 40 career sacks and 30 career INTs and he is second only to Jack Ham (53) in takeaways by a linebacker in NFL history with 49 (31 interceptions and 18 fumble recoveries).
As the heart and soul of the Ravens’ defense for close to two decades, Lewis earned 12 Pro Bowl selections and was named to seven first-team All-Pro squads. This past year he exhibited the tenacity, drive and dedication that he showcased throughout his career when he battled back from a possible season-ending injury to help lead the Ravens to their second Super Bowl championship in franchise history.
Lewis suffered a torn triceps against the Dallas Cowboys during Week 6 of the 2012 season. The injury kept him on the sideline for the remainder of the regular season but he battled back in time for the Ravens’ postseason run. The inspirational return was magnified by the Lewis’ announcement that he would retire from the playing field after the season.
Lewis played out the postseason in storybook fashion as he led the team with 51 total tackles (29 solo, 22 assists) and one pass defensed. The uniform he wore during the Ravens’ 34-31 win in Super Bowl XLVII was sent to the Hall of Fame on Wednesday. It is the second Super Bowl jersey worn by Lewis to arrive at the Hall of Fame. The linebacker’s jersey from his MVP performance in Super Bowl XXXV is currently on exhibit in the Lamar Hunt Super Bowl Gallery.
Ravens tackle and former teammate Jonathan Ogden became the first longtime Ravens player elected to the Hall the day before the team’s Super Bowl victory. Tickets and fan packages for the Class of 2013 Enshrinement Ceremony are on sale now.
