The process to select the Class of 2014 is in full stride. In late-August, the Seniors Committee named two senior nominees, punter Ray Guy and defensive end Claude Humphrey. The duo, who qualified as seniors since their careers ended more than 25 years ago, are automatic finalists for the Class of 2014.
Tomorrow, the process to identify the other 15 finalists to join Guy and Humphrey begins. The extensive list of modern-era nominees, that include players, coaches and contributors, will be announced exclusively on NFL Network at 10:00 p.m. ET.
At that time, fans are invited to share their opinions on the nominees by taking part in a fan vote found only on NFL.com.
In November, the list unveiled tomorrow will be whittled down to 25 semifinalists before being trimmed to 15 finalists in early January.
The full 46-member Selection Committee will meet in person for the annual selection meeting that will be held in New York/New Jersey on February 1, the day before Super Bowl XLVIII. The committee will first review, debate, and vote on the merits of Guy and Humphrey. Both men need to receive 80% support from the full selection committee to be elected to the Hall of Fame that day.
The next part of the selection meeting involves the full review of the careers of the modern-era finalists. After lengthy debate and discussion, the list will be reduced from 15 to 10. Further deliberation on the remaining 10 will be followed by another reduction vote to declare five candidates. At that point, the committee votes “yes or no” on those five individuals. Anyone of that group who receives 80% positive vote is elected to the Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2014.
