With a victory in Week 7 over the Buffalo Bills, New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick earned his 300th career regular-season victory, joining an exclusive group alongside Hall of Famers DON SHULA (328) and GEORGE HALAS (318).
Despite the accomplishment, in typical Belichick fashion, he downplayed the feat, directing the attention to the current Patriots season.
“I mean, it’s great,” Belichick said after the win. “I’m really more focused on, you know, our team and this year. Worry about that later. Thank you.”
On Sept. 8, 1991, Belichick earned his first victory as a head coach with the Cleveland Browns, fittingly over the New England Patriots. Of his 300 wins, 264 have come with the Patriots (2000-present) and 36 with the Browns (1991-95).
Over Belichick’s 29-year career, many of his milestone victories have come against the Bills, including his 50th (Dec. 16, 2001), 100th (Sept. 10, 2006), 150th (Sept. 26, 2010) and 250th victories (Dec. 24, 2017).
Belichick’s 331 total wins, including playoffs, ranks second all-time, behind Shula’s 347.
His 24 seasons leading one franchise (New England) are the second most in NFL since 1970, trailing Shula’s 26 with Miami (1970-1995).
Belichick reached win No. 300 in his 457th game as a head coach, the second fastest mark among the three coaches. Shula reached the total in 437 regular-season games, while Halas reached 300 wins in his 461st game.
Now featured in the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s “Pro Football Today Gallery” are Belichick’s visor from his 300th win, along with printouts of the polaroids he used during the victory.
