Museum launches yearlong tribute to members of NFL family who served during times of crisis

The Pro Football Hall of Fame, in conjunction with the National Football League, Visit Canton and ArtsinStark, is honoring those who served their country in a time of military conflict.

Located within the “Pro Football Today” gallery at the Hall of Fame, several artifacts from players, coaches and contributors with ties to major military events across the globe have been placed on display. The conflicts range from World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Desert Storm, 9/11 and the War on Terror.

ART DONOVAN’s World War II Marine jacket; PAUL BROWN’s U.S. Navy jacket; FDNY and NYPD caps worn by the New York Giants and New York Jets, respectively, after the 9/11 terrorist attacks; and Pat Tillman’s Army Rangers jacket are among the unique and story-filled items in the large “America 250” case. The display was made possible, in part, through a grant provided by Visit Canton and ArtsinStark.

“The Pro Football Hall of Fame is proud to participate in celebrating America's 250th anniversary," said Vice President of Museum and Archives Jon Kendle. "There are many values shared between the military and the sport of football. This display will highlight some of the stories of triumph, tragedy and personal sacrifice made by the more than 1,200 players, coaches and administrators who interrupted, delayed or ended their pro football careers to serve their country during these times of struggle.”

“America 250” is the country’s celebration to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, marking America’s semiquincentennial. This initiative encourages every American to engage in celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States and offers opportunities to pause and reflect on our nation’s past, honor the contributions of all Americans and look toward a positive future that citizens can help create for the next generation.

Guests of the Pro Football Hall of Fame can experience the “America 250” display as part of their regular admission to the museum, which is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. To plan a visit, click here.
