WireImage photographer Kevin C. Cox is the winner of the Dave Boss Award of Excellence for his entry in the 39th Annual Pro Football Hall of Fame Photo Contest. His photo, titled "Helmet Break Up," was deemed the Photograph of the Year for the 2006 NFL Season.

The color action image captures New Orleans' cornerback Mike McKenzie breaking up a pass intended for Carolina receiver Drew Carter during the second half of the Panthers' 21-18 win on Sunday, October 1, 2006, at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.

The prestigious contest, sponsored by Canon, U.S.A., Inc., the official camera of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, is open to professional photographers ordinarily on assignment to cover National Football League games. Photos taken during the 2006 NFL season, that included Super Bowl XLI and the 2007 Pro Bowl, were eligible.

Cox's entry was the first place winner in the action category and K.C. Alfred of the San Diego Union-Tribune placed first in the feature category. Alfred's image titled "Pour Marty," depicts former San Diego Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer as he is doused with water after his 200th career win while leading his team to a 14-2 record. The image was taken during the Chargers home game against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, December 31.

Judging was conducted in early April by a panel of prominent photo editors and photographers. The judges included Mike Fabus, Pittsburgh Steelers team photographer; Stella Kramer, Pulitzer Prize winning photo editor; Brad Smith, sports picture editor, The New York Times; Paul Spinelli, NFL contributor, Getty Images/freelance photographer; and Kevin Terrell, NFL business manager, WireImage.

Cox will be officially honored at the Enshrinees GameDay Roundtable, part of the Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinement celebration, on August 5, 2007 in front of a sellout crowd of 4,000 people. The multi-day enshrinement celebration is highlighted by the induction of the Class of 2007 - Gene Hickerson, Michael Irvin, Bruce Matthews, Charlie Sanders, Thurman Thomas, and Roger Wehrli - on August 4, followed by the AFC-NFC Hall of Fame Game the next day. This year's game showcases the Pittsburgh Steelers versus the New Orleans Saints.
