Extra Points from NFL Week 8 games
Each week, the National Football League releases statistical highlights from Sunday’s games played during the 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. ET windows. The Pro Football Hall of Fame will look at some of these highlights and how they relate to members of the Hall and the history of football. From Week 8:
- When the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Atlanta Falcons 16-0 …
- The Buccaneers became the first team in 52 seasons to win a game with zero pass completions (Buffalo; 1974) and the first team in 20 years to win a game with zero or fewer net passing yards (Houston; 2006)
- Bucky Irving and Kenneth Gainwell became the first pair of teammates in 50 seasons and the fourth pair in NFL history with at least 20 rushing attempts and 125 rushing yards each in the same game. The others were Wilbur Jackson and Delvin Willams (49ers; 1976), Hall of Famers JIM BROWN and BOBBY MITCHELL (Browns; 1959) and Ron Wall and Tank Younger (Rams; 1955)
-
Bengals’ quarterback Joe Burrow, after his 462-yard, six-touchdown (five passing, one rushing) performance, became the second NFL quarterback with more than 450 passing yards, five touchdown passes and a rushing touchdown in a game, joining Hall of Famer NORM VAN BROCKLIN as the only quarterbacks on that list.
-
2-point conversion: The game Van Brocklin achieved this was the same game (Sept. 28, 1951) in which he threw for 554 yards, which still stands atop of the NFL leader board.
- One of Burrow’s touchdown passes went to Ja’Marr Chase. This connection was the 54th time the duo has made it to the end zone, the second-most when both players are under the age of 30. Only Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback DAN MARINO and receiver Mark Clayton combined for touchdowns more often (65).
- With that catch, Ja’Marr Chase recorded his 60th receiving touchdown in 85 career games. He became the fourth player in the Super Bowl era with at least 60 touchdown receptions in his first 85 games, joining Hall of Famers JERRY RICE (77 touchdown receptions) and RANDY MOSS (66) as well as Rob Gronkowski (67).
- Also in that game, Mike Gesicki of the Bengals became the third tight end with a touchdown reception in six of his team’s first seven games of a season. He joins Hall of Famer ANTONIO GATES (Chargers; 2010) and Julius Thomas (Broncos; 2013) to accomplish this feat.
- Brock Bowers continues to etch his name in the record books after his seven-reception, 92-yard, two-touchdown game for the Raiders against the Jets.
- Bowers became the first tight end in NFL history with at least 70 yards in each of his first six games of a season.
- Bowers now has 11 career games with at least 90 receiving yards. This ties him with Hall of Famer KELLEN WINSLOW SR. and Rob Gronkowski for the second-most such games by an NFL tight end in his first three seasons. Hall of Famer MIKE DITKA (13 games) holds the record.
- Ravens running back Derrick Henry scored the 130th rushing touchdown of his career, joining Hall of Famers EMMITT SMITH (164) and LaDAINIAN TOMLINSON (145) as the only three NFL players to reach that mark.
- Cardinals tight end Trey McBride, who now has 413 receptions and 4,019 receiving yards in 74 career games, joins Hall of Famer KELLEN WINSLOW SR. as the only tight ends in NFL history with at least 400 receptions and 4,000 receiving yards in their first 75 career games.
- After his three-touchdown performance against the Broncos, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes now has 49 career games with at least three touchdown passes, surpassing Hall of Famers PEYTON MANNING (48 games) and DAN MARINO (48) for the most such games in the players’ first 10 seasons.
- Rams receiver Puka Nacua’s 80 yards and a touchdown on 11 catches lifted his career receiving yardage to 4,756 in 50 games, surpassing Hall of Famer LANCE ALWORTH (4,729 receiving yards) for the second-most by a player in his first 50 NFL games. Only Justin Jefferson (4,825) has put up a higher number.
- Steelers’ linebacker T.J. Watt recorded two sacks against the Cleveland, giving him 28 career games with multiple sacks. He is tied with Hall of Famer RICHARD DENT for the fifth-most such games by a player in his first 10 seasons (since the sack became an official stat in 1982). Only Hall of Famers REGGIE WHITE (38 games), JARED ALLEN (34) and LAWRENCE TAYLOR (31) as well as Simeon Rice (33) have more.
